GROSSES GEWÄCHS - GRAND CRU
”Grosses Gewächs“ – the name sounds respectful, admiring, and even a little ceremonial. And in fact its exceptional character commands deference and attention. For "Grosses Gewächs” wines are commitments turned into wine. Commitments to the region, the selection and to tradition. Simultaneously they are a promise to the wine lover, that an excellent draught with its own clear profile awaits him.

Under the VDP classification, the “Grosses Gewächs” wines belong to the highest level, 1. Lage wines, of the quality philosophy. It is from this level that our Grosses Gewächs wines and fruity sweet and noble sweet wines from the predicate Auslese come. The following criteria must be adhered to, when marketing wines as Grosses Gewächs wines / 1. Lage:
classification of the vineyards as 1. Lage. The experience of the estates involved forms the basis for the classification of excellent vineyard sites. Historical documents on the rating of the individual sites, such as the Royal Bavarian Soil Assessment of 1828, set the trends.
The varieties approved in the Palatinate are exclusively Riesling, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder.
The harvest amount is limited to a yield of max. 50 hl/ha.
The grapes are selectively hand-picked. The natural minimum density of must is around 90° Oechsle.
The wines are produced using exclusively traditional production methods.
The wines are tested and approved by a test body before and after bottling.
The wines will not be marketed until after the 1st of September in the year following the harvest.

The "Grand cru wines" from the 2008 vintage will not be available until after the 1st of September 2009.
